Alfred Grosser visiting professorship

The Alfred Grosser visiting professorship created in 1993 according to a renowned Sciences Po professor has been founded to have a place in the establishment for visiting professors and researchers from Germany. Its main objective is to solidify the tradition introduced by Alfred Grosser through his conferences on German current events and to have a visiting professor well versed on questions tied to Germany for the students at Sciences Po. The variety of the disciplines represented responds to the multidisciplinary criteria of the courses offered at the institution.

Every year, Sciences Po welcome two professors from German university.  

The chair aims to encourage the academic and scientific exchanges between France and Germany as well as to facilitate the development of joint projects.



Alfred Grosser



In France since 1933, Alfred Grosser studied in France and passed the competitive teaching exam (“agregation”) in German. Afterwards, he became professor and then Emeritus professor at Sciences Po. In 1955, his research became focused on political science and he became director of research at Sciences Po in 1956 until 1992.

Alfred Grosser worked for the French newspaper “Le Monde” as a political correspondant between 1965 and 1994 and held the same position at the newspapers “La Croix” and “Ouest-France” from 1994 onwards. His research and classes have been influential, notably concerning and cooperation Franco-German relations.

The Alfred Grosser chair is also open to applicants who have submitted their PhD thesis outside of Germany and to non-German nationals.
